My Pitch


Applying the codes and conventions of my chosen genre 

  • I have chosen the genre alternative pop and R&B as I understand what majority of the songs are about. There are different codes and conventions such as the majority of the songs are about love or heartbreak 
  • In majority of the songs, there is always a story behind the song, whether it be about a relationship just blossoming or a relationship on the rocks
  • I will be using different codes and conventions; these include technical codes and visual codes; together, I am preparing to make a music video with a meaningful story. 
  • I will use certain locations to create a purpose in the music video; a studio - where the artist gets to work and writes the song, a memorable location - where the artist gets their inspiration for the song and could have an important impact 
  • With the right selection and combination, I will be able to create a storyline which makes sense and matches the lyrics of the song
  • The language and the mode of address is also important as I have to make sure it meets the target audience
  • A narrative is important as I would like there to be a storyline and a purpose through the music video 

Construct representation of the artist or band 

  • I have the choice of making a positive video or a video that spreads awareness about a certain issue whether it be abuse or heartbreak
  • In this case, the song is about heartbreak and the struggles that come with it 
  • There also has to a purpose as to why certain characters are portrayed and represented the way they are. 
  • For example, this song shows how that men also are affected by heartbreak and it does not make them ‘less of a man’ 
  • Different camera shots can be used to represent different characters, if someone has been positioned to have a headshot - shows that they have a level of importance 
  • There will also be a representations of different ethnicities; the representations of people has changed and I will be including people with different ethnicities
Social, cultural and political context


  • Social - conforming to the social norms of today’s society - and how this also shapes the society we live in; we can portray that through the music video 
  • Different genres contribute to different sociological change, certain genres and certain songs may not intriguing to the public therefore I have to choose and make a music video that is intriguing to this specific target audience 
  • The social norm includes beauty
Inter-relate the products
  • Both of the music video, the double page spread and the magazine article will have elements which are the similar 
  • For example, the music video is about heartbreak, the magazine article could include the inspiration of the song and the artist’s own experience with heartbreak 
  • In the magazine article, I would include the reasoning and the inspiration behind this specific song
  • If the song has a specific lyric that the audience relates it, it could be included in the article 
  • Both music videos and the magazine article could also have the same colour scheme and similar icons
