Comp 3 Research - Audience Research
Primary Research - is information which is gained first handed from looking at examples of existing media products; primary research allows you to formulate your own opinions
Secondary Research - this is found in books and on websites, it is written by someone else about the media product. It will contain their ideas and opinions.
Task 1
→There are different methods used to target audiences and to also address the audience; singers and songwriters would use their social media platforms to target and promote their songs, They also use and create music videos which links to their music, to help give a story and a meaning behind the song
→Artists need to always think of their target audience, as they must be careful as to what content they want to put in their music. If the artist is targeting a younger target audience, they would have to make sure it is upbeat and something they would enjoy. If the artist is targeting young adults, they may talk about adult topics.
→Some artists talk about their own experiences, something that the audience could relate too. For example, heartbreak, love, beauty and many more
→Sometimes they use music videos to position the audience as if they are telling the story; for example, the lyrics could be in first person almost as if the person listening was in that position, whether it was about heartbreak or friendships
→For example, Adele's song 'Someone like you' can relate to anyone who has had heartbreak and it is written in first person; this connects with the listener as it makes them feel the pain.
→Audiences can respond to media products in various different ways; they can either love or hate it however, if they hit their target audience, then their song has a purpose
→Audiences can also promote the song as they can tell their friends and family, and they can also share the song on their own social media platforms; free advertising
Task 2
→Looking at previous blogs and their audience research, different groups have chosen different ways of planning their work
→The different ways of planning the research include :
- a pitch or a treatment
- a project plan, for example Gantt Chart
- There are also planning documents which can include a shot list
- a storyboard
- a script
- draft designs
- mock-ups of composition
- photographs
→A pitch is a good idea as it is a presentation of ideas for a selected audience
→A treatment is also a good idea as it summaries the elements of the idea and it also communicates the idea in a concise manner; almost like a marketing pitch
→The Gantt Chart is a chart which shows the amount of time allocated to a certain project, it also maps the work done at various different stages
→The mock-up composition is ideal as it describes the planning ideas in a very professional manner, this is normally done before the final product is created
Task 3
→Secondary research is found in books and on websites; for example, and is written by someone else about the media product you may want to create. It will contain the ideas and opinions of the writer
→Secondary audience research could relevant academic theories may help to develop your understanding and support your analysis
→Albert Bandura explores the way in which the media can influence social behaviour. One of it's main principles is the idea that the media can implant ideas in the mind of the audience directly
→Bandura's theory is relevant as in certain songs, it reveals the hurt and pain people go through during heartbreak for example. This could affect people's attitudes towards heartbreak and not wanting to experience it
→George Gerbner explores the way in which the media can influence the way in which people perceive the world around them; the idea that exposure to repeated patterns of representation over long periods of time
→Some might listen to music and judge people around them, whether this be in a good or bad way
→Stuart Hall's reception theory talks about the idea that communication is shown through encoding by producers and decoding by audiences
→In music videos, camera angles, the storyline, the motion and actions that happens throughout the video tells an audience a story. The lyrics itself also gives an audience feelings and thoughts
